This week, we moved from word marks and now looked at what logo marks are and how we can incorporate it within our project designs. I was able to understand that logos are a shortened version of a word mark and are of that can stand on their own as an identifying symbol. They can take many forms and it becomes important to consider what is best to go for towards my project design.
As we began, I was able to view a series of different examples of famous and widely known logo marks that are easily recognisable across the globe such as ‘Netflix’ and ‘Twitter’. I was also able to understand the difference between pictorial and abstract logos, those of which can resemble something in person or something rather recognisable. By reviewing this, I found it to be quite helpful in knowing what ways I can approach my logo design as well as the different ways in which they are formed.

I came across a series of books in relation to graphic logo marks and I found specifically that the novel; ‘Logo Modernism’ by Jens Müller, was very intriguing and helpful towards inspiration and guidance on my logo designs for my Bank brand.

Once I had a basic idea of how what forms logos can be seen as, we looked at what monograms are:
Whilst during class, I took some time with the recent knowledge I had with the different types of Logomarks and decided to create some mock-ups of how I wanted my Banking app design to look like with it coinciding with a logo too. I decided that I wanted to incorporate my logo into my bank name as I felt it looked better and I personally enjoyed how look of it and the final outcome. I will still continue to do mock-ups until I’m satisfied with a final result but until then I will work around these designs shown below.

As we reached the end of the class, we were given an exercise which involved us having to craft a design of our initials and an icon of an animal of our choice by only using three basic geometric shapes, which were a circle, triangle and square. Below is my take on both of these and they were predominantly created by using triangles. I felt the task was quite easy to complete especially when it came to designing the animal logo as I had seen similar art to the once I created of a fox, so I took it upon myself to create it with my own take. However designing the initials was quite tricky as I wasn’t sure how create them in a simple way, but after a few attempts I was able to grasp an idea of how to present them.

I had fun with this weeks topic on logomarks as I have always had a some sort of interest in logos and brands especially when it came to the design aspects of them and illustrating them. Some of my favourite logos would have to be Adidas, Nike, Lacoste, Boss and RGK as after reviewing this weeks class, I am able to now see the simplicity and design of their logos and how easy it is to spot them even when it isn’t entirely presented as the entire company. The task we did was good too and I’m excited to see where logomarks take me within my design project when it comes to designing and creating my own logo for my Banking Brand.
