This week, we covered the topic of Typography. This topic allowed me to understand what typography is and how it has changed throughout the years of design, as well as the design elements that it encompasses. I firstly learnt that the four basic typeface groups represent the terminology of typography.
Typography can be broken down into several main types, each with distinct characteristics and uses. Serif fonts have small lines or strokes at the ends of letters and are often seen as traditional, formal, or readable in print. Sans-serif fonts lack these lines, giving a cleaner, more modern appearance that works well on screens. Script fonts mimic handwriting or calligraphy, adding elegance or personality, but are harder to read in large blocks. Display or decorative fonts are designed for attention, often used in titles or logos, and can convey a strong mood or style.

On my first attempt, I scored 57/100 due to not entirely understanding how to use the different formatting options, but once I tried again, I was able to get a better score and give myself a better understanding of typography formatting.

When I had finished going over the learning side of our topic, It was time to put my understanding of typography to the test by carrying our an exercise in class which involved using type-scale within Figma and using it to create a basic example of a recipe. Our type-scale example that we used was ‘the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog’.

After I had completed the first part of the demo, I now had to represent how we would use grid lines within our Figma design, to showcase where text would go, as it would allow me to see and manage the spacing of information within it.

Once I had gotten through both part one and two of the Figma demo, I was now able to have some freedom and create my own poster based on the text I had chosen for this which i found very fun as it allowed me to experiment with a lot of different text sizes and let me see which ones fit the best within the design, which overall really improved my thinking towards using typography and getting myself to think outside of the box here.

I really enjoyed this weeks class of learning about typography as I found it very interesting to learn about as well getting to put it into action with some Figma exercises in class. I have also learnt how to use different formatting options whenever it comes to designing my own projects and understanding what styles of text I’d like to use as well as the sizing so that it fits within the design.
